View Full Version : I'm In Severe Need Of Assistance

I got my new comp.
Athlon 2100 XP
Abit KD7-G mobo
a gig of DDR 400 Kingston

Among other things.
But I'm havin some major issues at the moment.
I cant get my comp to actually turn on, it worked (with some IRQ conflicts and such) for a few days, and while i was sorting it all out, it suddenly wouldnt turn back on.
i can ocasionally get the thing to turn on, but before it starts the CPU/RAM tests it shuts itself back off.

I somehow get the feeling that the CPU warning/shutoff have something to do with this, perhaps they default to some retardedly low number.
the book says to reset the CMOS..which is easy enough to do (assuming it worked, since it wont post so I can tell.) but it really has nothing to do with the CMOS.

So in conclusion, I need to reset the BIOS. But HOW is the question.
I've tried everything i can think of, I took out the little battery that the MOBO uses.
Nothing changed...
Someone suggested that it might be that im sucking too much power out of the PS.
but really...thats not the case. It's a beast of a supply. 480w, and ATM the only things plugged in are the IDE HD. and the cathode light. and the only cards in there are the Vid card, and the sound card.

Frig..I'm out of ideas. I could really use some help. Even if your just throwing suggestins out.

What kind of cooling do you have going on on that CPU? Is the fan running when you power up?

Did you install the cpu yourself?

Yeah, it sounds like the CPU heatsink/fan might have a problem. Try removing it, regreasing it with thermal goop and reseating it on the CPU. Barring that, try swapping out the power supply for another and see if you can get it to boot.

You need more fans!!!!!!!

Have tried only using one memory chip at a time, try that if it still doesn't boot after taking one out swap them and try it again. Outside of the other things mentioned here, did you make sure that the cpu fan is connected to the correct connector on the board? There isn't a jumper on the board to reset the bios? There is on most new boards. Try taking out the sound card, eliminate as much power draw as possible. What kind of PS is it? 480w is nice if it's a quality PS like enermax or something. To quote Johnny 5 "Need more input" ;)

Being as it's an AMD board, does the memory have to be in pairs? I refuse to go to the darkside. Maybe Rocks can provide a little insight into the AMD side of the house.

AMD can bite my fat hairy arse. What till you all see my liquid cooled overclocked G4 PowerMac Intel box.

I saw a similar thing happen to a computer once. Turned out the power supply had gone bad. It was a pretty new system too.

Do you have any way to plug in a 300w or more power supply into just to see if it will boot?

Hmmm, no answers to our questions - his PC must have died completely... :)

I know this a a very, very basic problem, and you probably already checked for it ... but have you seated and reseated all of your cards?

In particular, if that AGP card is not exactly right, you can have some problems very much like what you are describing.

Make sure the card is seated all the way into the slot. I had one once that was hitting another motherboard component and not going all the way in.

Good luck,

Ive tried everything. Im stuck usin this POS I threw together.

I checked the PSU voltages, all good.
I reseated EVERYTHING.
Yes the CPU fan was Conntected.
I did all the ram jazz.
I have like 5 Fans in this thing Stitch, But mine Glow.
i thought maybe the Cathode light was takin too much juice...nope. the PSU is 480W too. its beasty.
I checked the CPU in someone elses Mobo.
And I reset the CMOS like 50 bazillion times.

Its such a random problem, because the mobo worked for a bit. then just stopped.
The Onboard network gets picked up by the router, and the little light on the board to tell you that there is power to the board lights up.
but not for the life of it would it turn on.

RMA time.

Yeah, sounds like an RMA issue.

Have you tried removing the reset switch wire? I have seen where if it is reversed it will prevent the system from powering up. Also have you switched around the power switch cable? Just something to try before you send the thing back. Try removing all wires other than the power switch and see if there is any diff.
