I've got a Presario 700 that works fine when it's plugged into the wall. But if I turn it one when it's unplugged, nothing happens. No lights blink, no fans spin. Nothing.

My first impulse was to buy a new battery, but geez those things are expensive. So I'm wondering if the problem might be elsewhere. The laptop already had another power issue in which it took bad temperature readings and would shut itself down at random. A simple download fixed it. I'm wondering if that fix could have caused a problem with charging the battery. Any ideas?

In my experience if it powers up fine when you have it plugged in but does nothing at all when you have the battery it has been the battery. When you have it plugged in and the battery in, do you have any indication that it is charging the battery?

Something to try. Pop the battery out and examine the connectors. Are they corroded? Maybe a bent pin? I had a laptop where on battery pin was bent slightly to the side and didn't make a nice connection.

You might be able to take the laptop to a local PC repair place and have them slap a new one in to test it out.
