View Full Version : LAN problem

I was doing some re-organizing at home and I moved my router, hub, wap, etc over to a new shelving unit. I disconnected all my PCs and then reconnected them. All seems fine except for my UNIT-2 PC which works for a few seconds, then loses all network connections. I've checked all the settings and they are fine. I assign all IPs on my network. If I reboot, I can browse, etc but as soon as I try to connect over the lan with another PC, it loses its connection and I cannot even ping the router from that PC. The other two computers on the network are working perfectly fine. Its only the UNIT-2 that loses its connection after a few seconds of lan activity. I tried doing a system restore to yesterday (for the hell of it) and that didn't work. I cleared the ARP cache, I can ping 127.0.0.1 and the ipconfig looks fine.

This was all working fine until I moved the stuff around (I need to learn to leave well enough alone! LOL)

I guess my next step is to uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP? Any other suggestions?

You probably already thought of these:

Poor RJ-45 connector
Damaged cable
Bad port on hub/router
IP Conflict with another PC (my first thought)
NIC failure
Router/Hub or NIC firmware upgrades?

It happened late last night, so I didn't try running a new cable. But this is weird.. I rebooted this morning before I walked out the door. Didn't do anything, just shutdown, restart.

I get to work and I can remotely access it now and even use the ftp server. Its really weird. Just looking around FTP server and it looks like my directory structure is off.. would system restore undo changes to your directory structure? Everything seems to be there but I moved a few things around on Sunday and I restored to Sunday morning restore point.

Weird stuff... LOL Worst case scenario is I try TCP/IP uninstall/install after trying new patch cable. If that doesn't work.. its not much to wipe and reinstall since the only thing loaded on this is WinXP, my FTP software, Anti-Virus, and Spybot S&D. Or even gives me a chance to install Windows Server 2003 and give that a shot.

Update: Still working. I can use remote management console to access FTP server and connecting via FTP is working fine. I'll have to wait until later tonight to see if the network browsing is working or not (damn dentist appointment after work). When I did a network neighborhood, it showed itself as the only PC connected, although the other 2 were in the same network.

Stitch... I ordered Green, Gray, Blue Patch cables in 3,5, & 7 ft lengths to setup as we discussed yesterday (3 of each for extras). I didn't buy the kit to make my own, took a risk with a ebay seller who were selling these for under $2 each. Excellent reputation marks from others.. so we shall see.

Replaced Cable - No Change

Changed router port to a port on my Linksys switch - No Change

I noticed that when it was working (prior to it stop working as it did every time I tried to browse the workgroup) it was only around 10kbs. Switch speed from 100 Full Duplex to Auto Sense - No Change.

Uninstalled NIC and reinstalled. Reset all IP settings. No change.

Set NIC back to Auto-Sense - All is working well.

*throws hands up*

I have no fricken idea what the hell the problem was/is. But its working flawlessly now with 'auto-sense' for the speed and I'm peaking back to the pre-switch speed of 8 - 9/10 MBPS when transferring between PCs. I've shut down and restarted numerous times and it's still working so far.... No thanks to Stitch who stays off IM in the evenings to avoid me requesting his help. :uzi:

Yeah, and by October it should be cool enough for you to actually sit in your room and use it. :D
