    Talking Why is it...

...that every time I decide that I'm going to install Windows 2000 on my desktop PC, there's always a show stopper? Apparently, the Promise ATA/100 controller that exists on the Asus A7V has issues with Windows 2000. This means that my CDRW and my DVD won't work at all... Oh well, back to the Butt OS (Windows ME). I'll be down for a couple of hours...grr...

I think my Windows ME hates changes in the registry. I can't reboot automatically (the software forgets to send the alt-ctrl-delete to the processor, so i see a blank MS-DOS screen), and everytime i shut down, windows exits with a BSOD. On the bright side, the boot-up is frickin' fast now.

Otherwise, ME is not a problem.

Funny you should say that Wolff....although my WinME shuts down just fine, it does exactly what you described when I select restart. Odd, I thought it was just me.

The BSOD problem is a well-documented "feature" of some of the versions of Detonator3. Download and install a later version of the drivers and I think that'll go away for you. Version 7.52 is out. You can download it from any of your normal driver sites, or, for ultra-fast performance, from the August Knights download site (if you're in AK). ICQ me for the URL, since I don't have it up yet and there's different versions for different operating systems.

I downloaded the latest drivers from nVidia.com, which I believe were leaked back in December...

I'm kinda skeptic about Dentonator 7 drivers. I hear they have OpenGL problems...?

Hmm... the problem I've always had with Counter-Strike was exiting to the menu, when done playing, in full screen. I'd see the background, but then the computer freezes. I worked around to make it run in windowed, but there's nothing like the full experience...

    Does 7.52 fix this?
Another question, why is the W9X driver 5MB when the W2K & WNT drivers are only 2MB?

well, that problem is still apparent in DirectX mode, but not in OpenGL...

I have a work-around for that problem. Click on the area where a button would be to the left of "Learn to play Counter-Strike", then hit escape when it tries to load a non-existant map, then click on the Play CS button. Voila!

I don't have the retail version, either. Give my work-around a try; it will probably work for you, too.

I don't have the retail version like you do Palooka. My copy of CStrike is the downloadable one from c-s.net. Thanks for the help though.
