This could be the killer iPhone app.

    Palm OS Emulator

I've resisted the iPhone because I have tons of Palm apps and use them regularly. This could be the back-breaker.

OT: Notice I used [&fmt=18] at the end of the URL. This is an undocumented YouTube command that toggles high resolution video. Try it without the command. It really makes a difference on some videos.

That's precisely my point. However, I have a buttload of applications that simply don't exist for the iPhone and I'm not going to switch if I can't use them.

For example, I have a handy dive planner for matching mixed gases, O2 orifices, and depth for my Dräger rebreather. I've also got a gas mixing app for blending trimix in the field or on a boat.

Another example is a .pdf reader. For no good reason, I have the U.S. Army survival manual in my phone. It's not necessary, but it's interesting to read at the dentist's office.

I can already read PDF files on my iPhone. The rebreather calculator is pretty specialized...I got nothin' for you there.

FYI, the iPhone now has trimix and nitrox applications.

I almost bought one today myself. Went to the apple store to see it in action and decided not to due to the price of there plans for one. They are way pricey for monthly charges. Also there safari web browser sucks to no end. I have to be able to log into the railroad website to see when I'm going to work. Stupid safari is so incompatible with most websites that I decided it wasn't for me. plus you cant just transfer files to the iphone from your computer. whats the point of having 8 gigs if you can only use them for music and pictures. dumb, real dumb

Id like to get one but if I cant use it for what I need than there's no point.

Price plans are in line with or cheaper than other smart phones.

Safari web browser blows away any other CELL phone browser in existence. I'm sure there are folks that prefer Blazer or something, but Safari is pretty much universally accepted as the current state of the art.

Sites that incorporate flash or java coding are not going to work. I suggest that sites which incorporate those technologies in the login area are poorly designed. Safari is a standards compliant browser. Are you sure that your company doesn't have a mobile compliant website (akin to google's m.google.com)?

There are at least 3 applications which allow you to do that on the app store NOW. Files, Datacase, and FileMagnet. Dozens of apps are being added daily.

No phone is everything to everyone. With the app store, the iPhone is pretty much more than enough for most people.

This was my conclusion as well. I spent quite some time doing a cost analysis. Yes the iPhone plan is the more expensive - but not by very much. Also, there's an undocumented 550 minute family plan you can get for $10 cheaper. AT&T offers lots of corporate discounts to employees as well - check to see if your railroad has an agreement. I get a 25% discount on my monthly bill due to who I work for.

I suggest that sites which incorporate those technologies in the login area are poorly designed.
I agree with this as well (man, I'm agreeing w/ Squid on way too much today.) Though I suppose this doesn't help FC's situation too much. I like Safari - it's a cell phone, not a laptop. My guess is Safari will be updated w/ patches to work w/ that stuff - though I almost hope not. I hate flash dependent websites.

On another note, be careful when using your iPhone for your SCUBA calculations. Those apps don't go through any kind of quality check. I downloaded a unit converter that was great - until the very first calculation I did on it I found the Pa to psi conversion was WRONG. Not good - just glad I wasn't using it for anything important at the time.

I bought a Motorola Q9c a little over a month ago and I have been extremely satisfied with it. Especially since it was only $79.99 and that it's on a real network - Verizon.

But in all honesty, if the iPhone was on Verizon - I would have probably bought it. My wife's company gets breaks for Verizon so I added the unlimited bandwidth and text messaging which brought out plan to be about the same it was before we got her employee company break.

I purchased a few apps for the Q, mostly just a better PIM than the defaults and also a good backup program. I have all my accounts on IMAP with Gmail and now it syncs with my Q via IMAP.

The biggest downside is I'm pretty much off Thunderbird and back to Outlook but since I now use Gmail for 95% of my email activities - it's not as big a deal as it was. Plus, with live bookmarks in Firefox, I don't need to use Thunderbird for RSS as much either.

Like Sonic - I was still using my Palm T/X and Palm Desktop as it just worked. But now I'm 100% on my Q.

So far I'm still committed to the Palm. For me, it does more things that I need.

Lately I've been using a lot of audio Bluetooth devices that use the A2DP protocol, which is inexplicably not supported by Apple.

Also, I need buttons for one-touch access to apps, web links, and messaging. Not having support for flash memory and not having a removable battery is also a deal-breaker for me.

Ideally, I'd like a phone with open software development freedom, a screen and web browser as good as Apple's, along with a real keyboard, expandable memory and a swappable battery. The iPhone's position sensing feature is also pretty cool.

Guess I'll just have to wait...

I'd love to get an iPhone.... if it was supported by Verizon.

My problem is that the AT&T coverage is at best sketchy. No 3G and usually only a bar of service on the old network. I use my phone as my primary contact device for work so it's vital that I can be reached here at my home.
I get great Verizon service here though.

When the iPhone is available on Verizon or the AT&T coverage improves I'll be picking one up.

Amen to that. I still hear complaints from people about AT&T coverage in Western and Central NJ. Since I work / Commute in those areas - AT&T is pretty much a deal breaker. Verizon it is.

I've never had an issue anywhere in NJ...top to bottom...and I've seen it all.
Dead center of the Pine Barrens last weekend - 4 bars.

NY is a different animal. But then again they elected Hillary.

J.D. Power and Associates announced the results of its latest study concerning quality of cell phone calls. Verizon Wireless ranked number one in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and West Regions, and tied Sprint for number one in the Southwest. Alltel ranked well in the Southeast and North Central regions. Notably absent from the rankings are AT&T and T-Mobile. J.D. Power surveyed 22,000 people and asked them about dropped calls; static/interference; failed connection on the first try; voice distortion; echoes; no immediate voice mail notification; and no immediate text message notification.
