Well, my friend's son is almost 17. He was at his dads house and was allowed to do anything and everything. he was smoking the maryjane like it was cigarettes. He flunked all of last year and his father completely aloowed it. Now he is with his mom to try and get back on track. He uses myspace to keep in touch with all his bad influences and she wants his access to that cut off. She doesnt want to have to pay for a program to achieve this. I know there is a way to go into DOS and cut off the access to certain addresses.

I can't test this at work but I would think that you could edit the host file and redirect myspace to cnn... or better yet, back to itself.

You can find the host file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host. Open in notepad

    127.0.0.1 myspace.com

It's been a while since I played with host, but theoretically this should work.

Nuts's solution is theoretically correct; I add this caveat: make sure the account the kid uses to access the computer doesn't have administrator rights or he can just go back in and undo that change to the file.

if the kid's this messed up, blocking myspace probably isn't going to stop him for long. At a start, I'd yank his ethernet card.

It's more than just theory. I do the same thing to guys in my office that abuse the internet and they usually don't ever think to look there. Hell their PC guys. I would normally just block the unwanted sites through the router but this method works great in a pinch.

For a more robust solution try this: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

I use this on both my kids Windows PCs. It's light-weight and free and works great.

You just have to hope he inst smart enough to either check the host file or learn that you can bypass that by simply typing in the ip address.

I would be interested in how to block site through the router too. The knowledge is nice to know..guess I'll try looking that up online unless there is a simple explanation.

One nice thing about the K9 software is that you can block or allow parts of a website by using a URL wildcard. For instance, say you want your kids to be able to get to www.myspace.com/Hardnok. You can set K9 up to allow that. This way they can get to certain portions that you deem acceptable.
