I finally broke down and bought this darn game. Its been really interesting learning the ropes. I need to purchase a jet pack but there seems to be none available.

Any particular servers you guys visit for this nasty game?

I only play where the ping is good. I dont have any favs. Maybe we should pick a couple of good ones and have those as possible CS meeting places. Drop me a line and we can hook up and try some servers out.

I am in the same boat as Goob. No favorites that I join just look for a good ping (sub 100) and free space. I am willing to hook up most any time except tuesdays and sundays when I have a regular thing to do.

I'm on CS a lot. I usually just look for the sub-100 pings ... which for me lately has been Daargoth's Lair servers and Weezle. Also, when the EVD servers are up, I can be found on them. But I really have no pattern ... I just follow the ping.

Hopelesscase here, only because I get sick of answering "NO" to the questions "Are you the Widowmaker on Quake?"... Ick, I do not play quack. "Are you the Widowmaker from Mechwarrior?"... Um, no. "Are you the Widowmaker from... &lt;insert game I never played here&gt;"... damn. How many bloody Widowmakers are out there anymore? Used to be I'd see one other, maybe two in a given game genre. But now... everywhere, even a whole clan of WidowMaker's (clan [WM]). Did someone in popular culture use the name somewhere for the kiddies to see or am I just a trend setter?

Oh well, let's just see how many Hopelesscase's there are out there.

Hopelesscase is the name I go by in Counterstrike. Hopelesscase is the name because I am a Hopelesscase.

Okay, I'm not the most intelligent person when it comes to online gaming and internet stuff. But this CS game sucks! It doesn't want to load up a list of games, and just sits there idling. Sometimes I can get past that and get the screen for loading up servers and it can't connect. And if it finally does bring up a list, it can't connect to the servers....none of them! Valve...I want my money back.

I read in the forums that yea...that just basically how it is, live with it.

Come on guys...what is the _oop on this info. Is this something that is normal?

Counterstrike is just a MOD for half-life. Valve realy has nothing to do with it other than putting it into a box. Use the filter to filter down your server list, be pretty strict on the filtering 'cause there are thousands of servers out there (like only dedicated servers, running game cstrike, under a certain ping, that are responding, have people currently playing, etc...) this should make your updates work in a reasonable amount of time. I never use Refresh, only Update.

You have the retail version, I don't know how but you will want to enable the Console.

Some servers will appear to have 1 to 4 slots open but when you try to connect it will say "Can't complete connection" or something along those lines. In the Console it tells you that the admin has reserved so many open slots on the server but without the console it tells you nothing but that you could not connect. Most admins reserve 2 slots (to make sure they can get on their server, a feature I like the sounds of) some reserve 4, a few reserve only 1.

Hope some of this helps, I have had no problems with it at all on multiple systems (including my POS laptop). I do not run the retail version but the downloaded mod for my old half life game.

Sadly, the thing lacking in CS/Half Life is a good server location system. Don't get me wrong .. the servers work okay most of the time. But it's damned hard to find the same one twice, because there is no search feature. If it had a search feature in the same manner as Tribes, everything would be cool.

Also, servers in CS are up and down constantly. You have to follow the ping, and not try to use the same one all of the time.

You need to got to a cheat site and find out how to turn on your console - it is a command line modification, I think. Once you have it, there are many more options in a game - voting to ban people, etc. You will also see more explanation when you don't connect ... it is usually because the server admin has reserved slots for he and his buddies.

Also ... I usually hit update and then hit refresh once, with my filter set to screen out anything with over a 100 ping. Update will yield some false low pings occasionally. Use it first, then hit refresh on the smaller list to find the quickest servers.

I am totaly with Abaddon about the server select thing.

I wonder if Gamespy would be better? I know it supports Counterstrike but I never realy made use of it before.

And like Palooka, it always has worked great for me. I'll keep an eye out for the command to be able to use the console.

I found the info for console in forum area from CSnet. Console didn't seem to provide much better info or connection. Noting different posts, console options were more for the server/admin side.

Thanks Widow & Ab for info...I now back to my original concern with my cable provider. I've been harping on them for over a month that their service is in question. Tribes was being affected by lag, spikes, and huge PL losses in February.

I sent a email to Zorro to review from my ISP on a systems check they requested to assist them in determining if there was an issue locate to my area or my home. I'm hoping that this IS the challenge and not the game.

I'm sure I'll have more questions guys.

I use Gamespy to find my games, don't waist your time trying to find servers useing CS. :P

It works for alot of games and is fairly easy to use.
