Is there a setting in outlook I can adjust, so that if someone sends me an e-mail with image attachments, the images will appear in the message? As it is, I have to click on the icons to see them.

When you see them in the email its because they are inserted not file attachments (which you see as the icons). Not sure if there is a 3rd party app that would do that or not,
