One of the 'worst spills in history' back in '79 and you never heard of it? Almost as if they cleaned it up, nature recovered, and life went on.

This whole report was: "It's happened once and they didn't learn. Shame on them." Which is utterly ridiculous.

And yes, Oil companies are more technologically advanced as drilling deeper, because enviro-wackos won't let them drill on land.

And as far as oil becoming the most 'profitable business in the universe'? Typical leftist, socialist crap. 'You make money... hence, you're evil', right?

I was 4 at the time, and I really never heard of it, up til now.....I was just shocked that I have not heard that there was a spill before. They said the Valdeez was the worst oil spill at 11 million barrells. The 1979 leak was 30000 gallons a day for months which was over 11 barrells. I was just suprised I never heard of it and I know there are some youngsters around these forums you old pro!

The biggest problem with this, as with many other large disasters, is delegation of authority. Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, which is the home of our Coastal Authority, was basically told that until the oil reached waters of the state, they had to stay home. Once the damage was done and the oil hit our marshes, then and only then were they invited to play.

What sucks is that Louisiana receives no direct compensation from deep-water drilling off of our coast, but we do receive the negative impacts in the event something happens. BP is writing the checks and therefore directing the cash at this point, which is understandable, but I think Louisiana should have a greater say in how this is managed, since we are the ones that will feel the yet-unknown economic impact for quite some time.

As an aside, I am very pro-drilling. The energy industry is huge in Louisiana, and I would hate to see that compromised by potential regulations that would drive the business elsewhere. Hell, my own job depends on it (which may be why I am now part-time..lol). However, I do feel that if a company is going to pursue new exploration technologies, they should have enough layers of protection and response plans to prevent another event like this from happening.

Oxyclean and Shamwow need to partner up and take care of this mess.

Have any of you seen this? It makes me glad Swae is there, so that we can get an honest perspective from someone we know personally.

A warrior is kinda like a blender. You can shatter it from a long way off with a gun, or you could even pull the plug so it can't move, but if you stick your face into it when it's moving........you're going to lose.

Let me respond point by point that she mentions, at least from what I know. Disclaimer - I am not in Venice, I am stationed in Grand Isle.

    1) Respirators - it is not a "BP Rule" that you have to be trained and evaluated to wear a respirator. Every company I have ever worked for requires a pulminary evaluation as well as a fit test before you can wear a respirator. Wearing a respirator is not like wearing a little paper mask like for painting. If you are wearing the wrong one, or are not physically cleared to wear one, you can end up doing more harm than good.

    2) Yes, we all are working for BP and have to follow BPs rules, or you get let go. From what I've seen, they are requiring everyone to follow basic safety, ie. we have to wear life vests on boats at all time and must have proper PPE when handling oiled wildlife and go through proper decontamination after encountering oil.

    3) Air monitoring - I've seen it happen. One person from each boat wears an air monitor through the duration of a work day and the results are evaluated by the EPA. So far, there have been no issues.

    4) Deployment when politicians visit - I certainly haven't seen that. There are literally THOUSANDS of people out here every single day working their asses off in the heat and bad conditions. There are busloads of trustees from the prison that walk the beaches every day. There are massive camps of contractors who are deployed by radio to ensure that the protective boom is maintained and placed where necessary. There are hundreds of boats in the bays all hours of the day and night skimming sheens and looking for oil. I can't imagine that they would try to put on a show and put even more people out just because a politician is coming - there are plenty of people as is. Disclaimer - I am only involved with the coastal effort, and know nothing of what is going on offshore.

I'm definitely not trying to defend BP - they caused this huge mess, we all know that. But everything I have seen of the cleanup effort has been well organized and productive. I have not seen any efforts to cut corners or 'cut costs', and it seems that there is no limit to what is being spent to minimize impacts.

I'll keep you guys posted as my work continues.

Hell of a response Swae, thanks. This video was causing quite the buzz around the office and I just wanted to share it with you all for comments. The insight you provided is invaluable for people like me, who only has the regular media and video's like this one for information. Thanks again.

I think that the only way to end the spill in the gulf is to not allow BP to turn profit on the oil recovered. So long as there is a chance for profit, they will not fully address the option to seal the well.
