Off I go to save the coast....

Well, it looks like I will be deploying to the coast in the next week or so to work as a consultant/biologist for the oil spill cleanup. I expect to be gone for 2-3 months, but I will only be stationed about 2 hours from home. The good side is that I will be contributing my 'expertise' to the cleanup effort and hopefully doing some good for my home state. The bad side is that I will be away from home for a few months with only 1 day off every 2 weeks. Also, I doubt I will be doing much gaming, since I will be working 14 straight 12-hour days at a time.

I'll know more Monday, but I expect to head out by next weekend. I'll try to keep you guys updated with photos and such for those that are interested in the situation. My big dilemma now is whether or not to haul my PC down to my new hotel lodging or buy a new laptop.

Swae, I think that is totally awesome. I'm disgusted at what is happening to the Gulf right now. A silver lining is it's good to see that at least they're getting good talent (you) to try and help with some of the fallout. And this means more solid employment for a friend during tough times - so yea for that!

Take the Desktop. Laptops never have the juice to do what you really want as a gamer. Also, you can save the laptop money for the vacation fund. The biggest problem usually is the internet connection. I find most hotel internet connections to really suck.

I'm trying to talk her into a macbook.

My laptop is old, and that's what she would be taking. The monitor looks worse every day, I swear (working on it right now).

I think of this as an opportunity to justify an upgrade to newer technology.

Sounds like a very rewarding (if challenging) job. Best of luck to you!

God speed Swae! Blaize and I wish you much success, and be safe.
A warrior is kinda like a blender. You can shatter it from a long way off with a gun, or you could even pull the plug so it can't move, but if you stick your face into it when it's moving........you're going to lose.

Thanks guys. I leave on Sunday and start work Monday. I'm pretty nervous and excited.

I started a blog so that I could share pictures and stories with people...if you are interested, the site is oilypelican.blogspot.com.

Added to my daily reading list. As far as I'm concerned, this is just about the only news story right now, no matter how much the news tries to trick us into clicking yet another story about Gary Coleman's funeral flower arrangements.

Well, after 2 delays, I'm finally leaving tomorrow to head to Houma, LA. After a day of intake-type stuff, it looks like I will be stationed in Grand Isle, LA. I'm pretty excited, since at one point it looked like I might be going to Florida. Nothing against Florida, but I'd much rather spend my energy helping my own state. I'll be assigned to the wildlife team and will spend my next few months on boat trips to recover oiled wildlife. It should be an interesting trip!

    Wish me luck!
