I don't know crap about this stuff but when I went to get mine the fella at the local puter shop gave me a Kingston card. He said it would work just as well as the others available and was more cost efficient.

Mine's an SMC - no problems. Do yourself a favor and get a name brand card. Kingston works. SMC, Netgear, D-Link, Xircom are all good brands.

I've always used 3COM NICs. I've used the one that is in my computer now for over four years. How's that for reliability?

What can you expect to ping with DSL, I know it varies, but just out of curiosity....

I usually end up between 70 - 100. 100-120 ain't too bad with no packet loss but any more than that and I usually pick another server.

Purchase a 3COM nic. 3COMs are the only NICs that you can manually set the "network priority" flag on certain types of TCP connections, giving your packets priority over all other data. At least, they're the only ones, to my knowledge. The "network priority" setting is generally used by infrastructure devices to determine which packets MUST get across the network, such as routing information, etc. A device examines the TCP header and sees this flag set, and essentially lets it go "to the front of the line".

I'll try to paste this text example of a packet, but I doubt it will be formatted correctly...
