If you were going to be stuck on a desert island with only a solar powered CD player, and could have only 10 CD's, what would they be?

Here is what I would bring

Pink Floyd (Momentary Lapse of Reason)
The Rock (Soundtrack from the movie by Hans Zimmer)
    Obituary (Cause of Death)
    Slayer (Decade of Aggersion Live)
    Anthrax (Among the Living)
    Eric Clapton (24 Nights)
    Frank Zappa (Joe's Garage)
    Napalm Death (Utopia Banished)
    Judas Priest (Screaming for Vengence)
    Metallica (....And Justice for All)

    Plus I found this funny!

    My ten:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I (first album)
    Pink Floyd - Meddle
    Tool - Aenema
    Radiohead - OK Computer
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
    Cake - Comfort Eagle
AC DC - Highway to Hell
    Eagles - Hotel California
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Source Tags and Codes
    Neil Young - Harvest

These are ten that popped into my head. I could probably pick 10 more to replace them if I thought hard enough.

Some of the following are multi-CD sets, but I don't care.

    1. Bach - Mass in B minor - English Baroque Soloists conducted by John Eliot Gardiner (Don't be afraid of the period instruments; this is inarguably the greatest recording of the widely-deemed greatest composition of all time.)
    2. Wagner - Der Ring des Nibelungen - Wiener Philharmoniker and various legendary singers (including Joan Sutherland, Kirsten Flagstad, and Birgit Nilsson) conducted by Sir Georg Solti (It doesn't get any better than Solti's Ring cycle. This is 14 discs of sublime and glorious musical theatre.)
    3. Beethoven - Piano Sonatas - Wilhelm Kempff (These are the stereo recordings, although the earlier mono recordings are arguably his best.)
4.Mozart - Die Zauberflöte - Academy of St. Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner (My favorite recording of, quite possibly, my favorite opera. Cheryl Studer is an achingly beautiful Queen of the Night.)
    5. Beethoven - The 9 Symphonies - Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique conducted by John Eliot Gardiner (More period instrument recordings by Gardiner that nevertheless consistently astound, excite, and inspire)
    6. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (The ultimate jazz album and best American music of any kind as far as I am concerned. This is an absolutely indispensable album, and if you don't own it, I pity you.)
    7. Miles Davis - Miles Ahead or Sketches of Spain (Take your pick here; these are both incredible albums of great significance. The Miles Davis/Gil Evans partnership is one of the most fruitful musical relationships of all-time.)
    8. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme or Giant Steps (If you want to hear music produced by a man whose playing is so intense and inspired as to seem the product of one possessed, look no further.)
    9. Robert Cray - Midnight Stroll or Shame + A Sin (My all-time favorite blues/soul performer)
    10. Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood (Or any other Stevie album. He was a bright flame who, unfortunately, was extinguished far too early. The list of brilliant musicians who died young is tragically long.)

There are countless discs that would pain me to leave behind, including many classical recordings and those of Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Joe Louis Walker, Phish, et al.

I have a fairly large mp3 collection, and if anyone is interested I can set up and ftp server to grab whatever you want.

My playlist is over at http://www.rotatingplastic.org/playlist/ (may take a while to load depending on your connection)

If interested I will post ftp info in the private section of the forums.
