Speaking of Frace, I have decided to try and learn their language. Anyone know if its really possible to learn a second language from audio tapes?

My grandmother learned German from records and books. Pretty fluently too.

There are two books, Merde! And Merde Encore! That will teach you how to swear en francais. They not only have swear words but are good guides to actual slang in french. I took 4 years of french (2 in high school and 2 in college) and all I remember are the swear words

I can usualy read french enough to get the gist of what is said though (20,000 legues under the sea is very different in french than the english translations). I am totaly lost trying to speak or understand spoken french any more.

It's possible to learn the basics from tape - and I recommend it.

However your learning will take an exponential jump if you get a chance to actually use the language with native speakers.

Non-native teachers aren't the same, as most of them don't come close to the pacing and slang that youll get from the real deal.

Similarly, you'll lose it quickly if you don't keep practicing. I used to be fluent in French, but now all I can do is read it (and I struggle at that...)

You don't need to learn how to speak French, just carry a white flag and you have the entire basis of conversation covered.

I think learning French is a great idea. That way you can make sure they understand you when you tell them they are a bunch of snivelling, elitist cowards.

Another benefit - when travelling you'll be able to understand the waiters when they insult you and spit in your soup.

I actually took French back in high school, and I don't remember a damn bit of it.

I've been wanting to learn a foreign language for some time, and actually signed up for a Japanese intro course but it got cancelled from not enough people signed up and I haven't pursued it since.
