    Vid card wars continue

New GeForceFX 5900 Ultra versus ATI Radeon 9800 Pro:

And no more "leaf blower" cooling system for the FX.

True but now it has a 3/4" inch heatsink sticking off of it. So it still takes up two slots! That son-of-a-gun is huge. I wonder how much it weighs

I heard alot of complaining about it using the AGP and the ajoining PCI slot and I wonder how many people remember using 2 3dfx cards in SLI mode? That took up 2 PCI slots BEFORE there were AGP available! So to me, taking up a PCI in addition to the AGP is no big deal.

August / September - That's when I'm building my next beast of a desktop system. =) I'm going to go all out with a full tower case and several control bays and perhaps even a build in LCD screen on the case.

Well for the same money I will have to say I think Radeon is still better due to the fact that they have hit the same benchmarks in the gaming tests as the Nvidia but without losing a slot and without having the heat issues. Nvidia could very well rule the roost again soon but they need to take the lead rather than playing follow the leader.

If I were buying 'right now', I'd buy the Radeon too. BUT, there are a few reasons I stick with NVIDIA.

    1) Drivers - ATI still has more 'anomolies' with their drivers than NVIDIA even though they have improved on them greatly. NVIDIA offers up Windows Certified and reference or BETA drivers very often for anyone who chooses to use them.

    2) With all my devices and equipment, one less plug to plug-in (ALA the power hungry ATI with a separate power source) is all the better.

Also, the new 5900 does not appear to have the same heat issues as the 5800.

Check the latest DoomIII benchmarks from HARD OCP linked on my site. NVidia kinda blows ATI away.

I did the whole SLI thing with the two cards and a main video card back in the day. But my point is that the thing is huge! If you need a heatsink that big to keep the thing cool. You need a better chip design. No way am I going to put that fat bastid in my system. I would need at least another two fans to then dispurse the spanned heat from the card. As it is my case hovers on my desk from all the fans!!

Hylander--- The FX line uses an external power source also.. It has a plug on the end of the card. Looks like that will be the trend now to get the power needed to run the latest and greates.

I am not going to take that Doom test to heart yet.. I think Nvidia pushed that to show off their card with their tweaked out drivers. The drivers they had for the 9800 were not tuned for Doom yet. I think that ATI will come out with a new set optimized for Doom and we will see those numbers narrow greatly. Of course thats just my opinion, but I think Nvidia has jumped in the sack with ID to try and regain some consumer confidence in their product since they had the issues with the last card. We will just have to wait and see what ATI pulls out.

In other words, you have a poorly designed system.

I just saw that this afternoon a matter of fact. Looks like it's time for an even bigger Surge Protector!

Squid I was going to fire up DOOM III then I realized, that it doesn't come out for another 6 months or so and that's if they hit their target release date. So comparing the 2 cards one with drivers that support Doom III engine, one without drivers that support Doom III is rediculous. If you race 2 cars one with gas one without gas I wonder which one will win.
