    Video card performance graph

Tom's Hardware site has been overloaded today at least to me while trying to find the Mark 3D 2001 Nvidia verses ATI test results. After about fifteen minutes I was able to grab the image. The new Nvidia 5600 and 5200 are poor performers and certainly not worth the money when even the 4200 outperforms them. The question is, are the new FX cards ever going to hit the market? I've heard a rumor that the 5800 FX Ultra may only reach the hands of those that preordered. Rumors aren't dependable but Nvidia certainly isn't helping matters with their silence.

Nvidia is Stoopid for doing what they are right now. Silence will holy hurt them. Even on "The Screen Savers" the guys who host the show are making sneers when they mention Nvidia. And all the stuff they have been testing and playing with is ATI cards.

WTF, Nvidia get your balls out of your butt and get back in the game. Slackers!!

I'm not defending NVIDIA here by any means, but do remember the 5x00 series is DX9 compatible, and the 4x00 isn't. That being said, I'm happy with my Ti4600 for now.

Funny thing is, NVIDIA and ATI are both suffering from the fact there are shortages of both of their products.

I thought Nvidia addressed 4x00 DX9 compatibility with the latest detonator drivers (?)

Bribo, I haven't heard much lately... but initially when I had heard that most were saying the performance in the new 3DMark was still far less than stellar, in comparison to the 5x00 cards. But of course, they all trail the ATIs regardless.

Shortages? I didn't know anything about that. That's odd. Does that explain why the 9800's aren't on the shelf yet?

ATI's performance lead may mean squat

The only time it would really bum you out to be Top Dog in the consumer gaming graphics card market would be when you couldn't come close to meeting demand. Apparently, this is exactly the situation ATI is in right now, coupled with rival NVIDIA.

Limited supply of Nvidia’s GeForce FX 5800 (NV30) and GeForce FX 5600 (NV31) series chips has pushed some demand to ATI, card makers said. However, a shortage of ATI’s Radeon 9700 and Radeon 9500 chips has been reported and output of its new-generation Radeon 9800 (R350) series has also failed to meet demand. Sources said that with ATI shipping products first to OEM customers like IBM, NEC, Dell Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP), its more own-brand-oriented add-in board (AIB) clients, such as Gigabyte Technology, CP Technology and Info-Tek Corporation (ITC) (selling under the brand name GigaCube), are able to obtain only 50% of the chips they ordered.

By focusing on OEM deliveries, ATI is trying to keep its business partnerships in good health, but the enthusiast market, where ATI has had a difficult time, needs to see cards on the shelves of Best Buy and the like. Of course, ATI's reputation has perhaps benefited most of all since the release of the Radeon 9x00 line, even if they can't meet sales. Thanks to DQA for the heads up.

Wow!, thank's for posting that article. Now it's really starting to show that Nvidia is slipping up. And that ATI is getting pushed up the chain for demand. It will be wild to see what happens next.

Go to www.hardopc.com There is a brand new review of the 9800, and it is now the king of the court.

My previous video cards were, in reverse chronological order:

    Nvidia Geforce 3
    Nvidia Geforce 2 MX
    Nvidia TNT 2
    Nvidia TNT/Voodoo 2
And (roll drums) the PowerVR with which I played many a game of I-76. Was that an NEC card? I can't remember.

Needless to say, I had a long run of very good luck with Nvidia. But ... based on my experience with this Radeon 9700 Pro (and Nvidia's questionable behavior with their latest cards/drivers) I think I'll be sticking with ATI for a long time. The new Catalyst 3.4 drivers are awesome, and I think ATI finally has its act together with driver updates.

    Love those benchmarks.

5900 FX will be the one to bank on I think.. the other ones are all on the NV34 chipset, which thus far hasn't shown anything good.
