    New generation of cards?

Some of us were talking on Ventrilo last night about video cards and I was wondering about when the next generation was coming out. Somebody mentioned May.

I've been holding off on a new card for quite awhile now since I felt that the latest and greatest wouldn't be a quantum leap over my Ti4600.

    So...

Who's coming out with what and how good are they supposed to be?

I'm thinking that around Xmas I'm going to also get a new processor and mobo with a quicker FSB. Then I'll be able to get back into 3DMark wars again.

    April 13th for the NV40

from the speculative spec of the card sounds like it will eat Dx9 games for lunch compared to todays cards.

ATI's 420 should follow on its heals and be nearly as powerful a card

so far the differences ive seen:

    NV40 = 16pipes!!!!! pixel shader 3.0 and vertex shader 3.0 support

    ATI 420 = 12 pipes with no 3.0 support.

sounds like the ATI card will be slower but no guarantees. I love my current Nvidia card over the current ATI offerings personally so i tend to believe NV40 will prolly carry the same feel and more.

heres a tidbit on Nviidias next gen product i came across

Well it's time, some of this info in not new and it was speculated before, now is just confirmed.
The card that was running those games was an NV40 ( it was an A2 revision ) clocked at 475mhz Core and 1.2ghz memory ( gddr3 ) and 256mb. The card IT IS 16x1 as the fillrate shows it. With 3dmark2001 give results of 7010 Mpixels/s for single texturing and 7234 Mpixels/s for multi texturing ( pretty impressive don't? ).The PS performance is boosted a lot, at least 2.5x faster and even got to 5x faster. The AA used in the pics is RGMSAA at 4x, the maximum AF ( on this drivers, 56.55 ) was 8x but I think that we will see 16x. In most of the games the performance was 2.5x to 3x faster than my FX5950 using high resolution and AA as well as AF and well the IQ...... what can I say? is far far better. Now some things, they were a lot of problems, mostly corrupted textures, but not in any of the tested games, I'm 100% sure that at launch the drivers will pack a lot more of features just for the NV40. In other thing, I can't argue that indeed there is some blurring in those SS, but first think:

    1) if you don't zoom the picture it looks just damn good.
    2) there are no final drivers, so no final AA or AF levels.
    3) I'm not saying is better than ati or anything like that, I just think is WAY better than any other Nvidia card.

and for a matter of speed, remember that A2 is no the final revision, so the final "could" be a little faster. Well that's all... at least all I can say now, there is something else but I risk too much and I have a promise, maybe later in this month, but I have said everything I know, hope you like it, and again excuse my bad english

I'm an ATI convert, but I think the NV40 is going to be an extremely solid card. The reason being the latest NVIDIA cards over the last year or so have basically had their lunch eaten for them by ATI after owning the market for quite awhile. NVIDIA "needs" a top of the line, pack leading card again to save face.

FYI, don't count on those ATI specs you listed as being the final card specs.

I agree with your take. NVidia is getting the hype for now while ati is being hush hush.

I get the impression NV40 may have the grunt this go round while ATI's real punch may come in the form of the 423 not to long after nv40 comes out.

I wish one could take the speed of the ati and the quality of the Nvidia put it in a blender with a dash of digital vibrance and mmm the perferct card =)

ill tell yah to NVIdia's latest drivers besides being rock solid across the board have some of the kewlest features ever. couple examples: per game graphic settings (waay cool) and global refresh rate overides even cooler.

With the next batch of cards hitting the market soon, these revamp of cards look to be nice for people looking to do a mid-level upgrade. I for one want to wait till late summer early fall before diving back into the 'big-bad-boy' card arena. For now I'm super happy with my ATI 9600XT. And that 5900XT does look really good too!

I just bought the Chaintech Nvidia 5900XT card mentioned above. The reviews were very favorable and I'm an Nvidia bigot at heart. It should tide me over until the next generation of cards is out and prices on those cards begin to approach the reasonable level.

In any event it's faster than the PNY Ti4800 I'm currently running (and soon to be installing in my son's machine). Hoping to get a boost in games like 1942 and BF:V and see what FarCry looks like with a decent resolution and all the bells and whistles turned up.

If its new, I'm buying it! I have an 9800xt for over two months now, so I'm due for a new card soon. HMMMM ATI or Nvidia.... I wonder what Sarah (TRON) would say!

Cruiser, those benchmarks are fake. You should have read the article a little closer, especially toward the end.

NV40 otherwise known as the Geforce 6800 series look to be a feature packed hardcore card. The ATI 420's look rockin as well, may end up being a bit faster! dont think itl be enough for me to not want to take Nvidia's monster for a spin tho! Having used both ATI and NVidia latest gen cards i prefer Nvidia's drivers, compat and Digital vibrance!

either or of next gen cards kickass, to me its all bout features with speed at a fair price. The competition tween the 2 has em both refining the hell out of ther products. Nvidia tends to be a bit more feature packed with bigger bundles, video in and out functions (vivo) and more future proof with support for 3.0 pixel shaders, 3.0 vertex shaders etc. ( more future proof this go round)

5900 plays Farcry just fine, 1024x768 with some aniso and med to high game details not to shabby. I believe the ATI cards play that title faster while BFV seems better suited for NVidia thus far. Im very pleased with the 5900, it rocks! The card ill be watchin for is the 6800 non ultra as itl start at 299, have 12pipes and should overclock like mad. Middle of may to end of may for all these badboys to hit. no need for one here yet but im sure interested!
