    CS: Source Beta

Anyone playing it yet? I hear it's open to owners of Condition Zero, which I'm sure some of you unwisely bought.

It doesn't look too unwise now, does it? I'm checking to see if it's up and will report back if I get it.

Wewp! I got it! Downloaded it via steam...took about 50 minutes. I loaded it up on my shuttle box - (P4 2.6 ghz, 512ram, Geforce 4600)
I was running at 1024x768... Searched for servers, and there was dozens of them out there....loaded with players. I picked one with nobody on it as I wanted to just run around calmly and check out the graphics. I got in and the map was Dust. WOW. Major graphics improvements everywhere... The map was the same, the weapons were the same, but everything was jazzed up. You had dust hanging in the air...shafts of light visible through windows...lots of ambient noise (airplanes/choppers/etc.) There was a ton of crap lying around on the ground. Old tires, bottles, cans, buckets, and you could kick all of it around (or shoot it.) On the underpass of dust there was a tire leaning up against the wall and I was able to push it down the ramp. It rolled down to the bottom before doing a spiral and falling flat on its side. Very realistic. The graphics for setting the bomb were all new... no more bar filling up. You see yourself punching in a long code number and once the code is complete, the bomb is set. Some players jumped in and soon we were playing 4 on 4. The "feel" of counterstrike is still there... it's very faithful to the original game. However barrels can be rolled down on your opponents, and gunfire often brings a rain of debris from the walls that are getting hammered by your bullets. The player models aren't "super awesome" but they're upgrades over the CS models. The guys don't duckwalk so badly anymore when you're walking crouched over. Performance wise, the game did very well on my little system. I'd love to play this game on my big machine. I took about 20 screenshots, and I'll upload some of them to my site when I write this up later. Very very cool.

    Lan party anyone?

No, it's embeded in my system (Like CS Condition Zero, Steam downloaded it and installed it for me and it's part of that package...)

Here's my mini review with screenshots.

Squid, here is a server you can play on that doesn't tolerate smacktards: 69.28.221.247:27015 but if you tell them you know Gunny they will let you stay anyways

How can we LAN party it if it's only available to a select few?

Coolio. Dust is the only map in this beta, and folks are rapidly getting the hang of the game. There are some huge games out there... 20 players to a side or more. I was in a big 12x12 last night (and this morning...I was up until 1:30am playing.)

The way you can roll tires around and tip cans over still makes me laugh.

The mappers at CTR are already working on trying to convert some of the maps from the custom server to work with source. Hopefully it won't take to much reworking and they will be able to convert a lot of the custom maps. I for one don't like stock maps much anymore, I like the challenge of people not knowing every spot on the map blindfolded.

WOW! It does look great. I didn;t have alot of time last night to play, but it looks awesome. If you have the ATI/ Half2 bundle, you get access as well, FYI. Anyway, It sounds like we need to get CS going again. Winter is coming soon!
