    Going under the knife..

MRI confirmed I have to get an elbow subcutaneous ulnar nerve transposition operation next Friday. Basically, if you know what carpal tunnel is, this is cubital tunnel and it's basically the same thing except in the elbow. They need to take the nerve running through my arm and relocate it to another position because it is getting pinched (looks like an hour glass). It's about an hour and a half procedure. Besides the aching pain and occasional jolts of severe nerve pain in my elbow, I've lost about 40% of the strength in my left hand and some motor skills such as my pinkie doesn't always go where I tell it to while typing. They don't know how much of the strength or motor skills will return, but the mild numbness (particularly in pinkie and finger next to it) and pain should subside after surgery.

Ironically, Non related to my current problem... when they were doing X-Rays they found that my elbow is actually fractured as well. You know how your upper arm bone comes down and forms 2 "lobes" that sit in a socket on your lower arm? Well one of my lobes is completely separated and only attached via scar tissue. NO idea when that happened, but the joint is very solid and in place but very weird. I've had 3 specialist say it's highly unusual, but it may have happened when I broke my arm when I was three years old and went undetected and never healed properly or it may have just been a birth defect that went undetected. (My wife buys into this argument since she is always telling me I'm defective ) Kind of funny I played sports my whole life, including football, and never had a problem with it. All of the specialists said as long as Im not bench pressing heavy weights It should be fine and they would never touch it with a surgical procedure.

It's hell getting old like Squidly!!

If you guys don't hear from me for a few days after next Friday... someone needs to assume my responsibilities of harrassing Stitchie Poo on a daily basis through posts, emails, and IMs. Thanks!

I take it that you'll be completely anesthetized? Best of luck and our prayers with you on a successfull operation and a speedy recovery. Take it easy, follow the Doctor's orders and enjoy watching a lot of Jerry Springer.

    Squidly.. I'm right handed.

Nuts, yes - it will be general anesthesia so I will be out for the entire procedure. The doc told me the recovery time is fairly short and since it's a Friday I should be able to return to work on Monday. He said most of the issues are just keeping the incision infection free and controlling the inflamation/swelling since there will be alot of soft tissue being irritated during the procedure.

    Thanks for the wishes everyone.

Just an FYI.. this pretty much explains it all - particularly the cubital tunnel part.

Hy, I should be back to work next week, and will gladly continue to harass Stitchie Poo in any way that I can. As a sign of respect I will double my normal efforts and try to make you proud. Hope all goes well with the surgery.
