I can't believe this is coming from the Bush White House. This just boggles the mind.

not mine beast, he wanted to grant amnesty to 3 Million Illegals not that long ago. This is the one issue that really turns me off from this administration. I can't believe that they want to make America secure, while opening the gates.

Obviously they're more worried about the Hispanic vote than potential national security repercussions.

Bush certainly hasn't flip-flopped on this issue out of his born-again Christian compassion.

There are two sides to every story. I'd feel better about this article if they made even a passing attempt at finding the other side in this one.

I suspect this is another in a long line of items that support is thrown behind for political gain even though they're not really in favor of it - because they know it won't pass.

A la the protection of marriage amendment.

So much of politics is posturing.

    Reality Check!

Well, having enforced this Country's Immigration Laws for the past going on nineteen years I'm not surprised. Stop and think about the reality of rounding up three million "illegal aliens" with ten thousand Border Patrol Agents. And even if you could round them up, think about how much time and money it would cost to push them through removal proceedings. Then consider the fact that, within lets say we give most of them four months (more like two to three weeks, some just days), they come right back again. Now, realistically speaking, first of all, we don't have the infrastructure in place to effectively deal with this problem. Especially when you start incarcerating them, every tooth that never was filled suddenly needs to be and every ailment they ever had must then, during that time of incarceration, be treated. So what is it that we can do? (Hold your thoughts folks, to be continued when I return from the movies) At this point in the game, pun intended, its to late to whine and moan about why Pedro or Usama's nephew is here. The best we can hope for is that we start identifying them via biometric data. Hence, amnesty (it makes me want to puke) and/or handing out worker permits to the many who would like to enter in order to legitimately work (if you think that eveyone will have legitimate motives for being here your being naive to say the least). Those who receive permits could then be biometricly entered into a National database where they could never say, "you've got the wrong guy I just got off the banana boat." This country is in quite a quagmire predominantly due to 40 plus years of soft "Immigration Policy." Not to mention those who buy into the "we are the melting pot" theory. How dare we not accept everyone and anyone! We dared and we are stuck with what we have. Many who are here from tainted cultures that could give a damn about the American way of life as long as their primary purpose for being here, benevoloent or malevolent is fulfilled. SO, what do we do about it. We have no choice, we have to do what the Founding Fathers of this country expected us to do. We have to show all of these people who have come here, some with very bad intentions, what it means to be a citizen of this great country. This is going to be hard for some to swallow, we have to be guided by the hand of God, live by Christian principles and instill those core beliefs throughout our society. We have to trust that the Holy Spirit will persevere. That is the only hope that we realisticly have in order to live harmoniously and peacefully in this great country.

This could get a little heated, I mean no personal offense to anyone, if our opinions differ I'll agree to disagree. Just my thoughts.

They are entering the country ILLEGALLY. Shoot first, ask questions later. They won't be trying again in a few weeks I can tell you that.

I don't have a problem with immigration, as long as it is by the law and all requirements and procedures are followed. I also know and understand that the illegal labor keeps prices low for certain goods and services and that we don't provide the resources to the people doing the job. However, considering the security issues we now face - it's time we stop the PC, liberal, *group huggie* bullsh@t.

way back when, oh say 100 years ago, people actually came here to work, assimilate and provide to the American culture. Our culture is a mix of what others brought with them. People learned English so that they could get along in the workforce and society. Not true anymore. People cross the border to give birth to allow them to stay. All sorts of illicit material is crossing our pourous border. I do remember hearing about all of the undocumented Italians that crossed here illegaly through Canada in the 1910's, what a problem it was then.

Every person had something to give back. Name me a great immigrant accomplishment in the last 50 years?

Ages, I wish we could make the border patrol 100,000 strong, a good start might be to transfer some of those "non-essential" federal employees that were sent home during the strike in the early 90's. Or, bring the boys home to protect our land instead of other's. I believe that citizenship should be earned, and is not a birthright. Being a good American should be the greatest of priorities.

And Hyo, you are right on, Shoot to Kill orders would lessen the issue.

A strong border and harsh stance on illegals sounds great on paper.

The problem is that doing it would cripple our economy. I'm not even understating the problem.

To just say "be tough on illegals!" is to make the same mistake most liberal thinkers do on damn near everything. They look at a problem and craft a grade school, wafer thin solution without considering the reprecussions fully.

Many US businesses would be forced out of business or made to leave the country entirely if suddenly they had to hire a domestic workforce (and pay them minimum wage plus benefits.) The US would lose jobs, and costs for everything would skyrocket.

    No, it is great.

I understand the effect it would have on the economy, and I appreciate your acceptance that these policies are coming from big business lobby to my president. I live in the United States of America, not the United Corporations of America. Maybe US Business should take a peek at how they are getting their work done and change it, regardless of cost. It's their policy that has caused our social ills. They can clean up their own mess.

I appreciate your condescending attitude, and your observation that I must not understand much at all. I'd pay out the nose for pancakes if I knew our border was clean. And I'm sure that there would be quite an offset in welfare benefits and health care costs that wouldn't have to be paid vs. cost of goods that had to be made at minimum wage.

Costs would go up, yes, for everything, no. And because a business is entrenched in shoddy, and yes illegal business practices, that means hat I should just accept it and let any ausländer go get a drivers license? I don't think so. If you think it's so wrong, why not take a few hundred to live in your home?

do you play games anymore? or do you just like to insult everyone else here? if you have all of the answers, run for office yourself. please, please, season your advice with performance.

    Have a Fan-tab-u-lous day!

No I don't play games anymore. None of the recent online games do anything for me and I'm bored with the old ones. Maybe I'll play online games sometime in the future. I'll let you know.

    And I'm NOT insulting anyone.

Regarding the issue, it's fine to muscle up and say:

"Maybe US Business should take a peek at how they are getting their work done and change it, regardless of cost. It's their policy that has caused our social ills. They can clean up their own mess."
It sounds all tough and stuff. Moxie! However this issue requires Kerryesque levels of nuance. The problem is deep. You cannot expect companies to voluntarily gut themselves, or the government to force them to. If you say YES! DO IT! Without any consideration for the real world, then I have to say that's an unlikely, overly SIMPLISTIC viewpoint. Sorry! No insult intended!

I'd love to see a practical solution to the problem. I have a hunch it'd take decades of gradual, scheduled reforms - taking ALL the issues into account and addressing them all in turn. Slamming the door is neither practical or prudent.

When the cost of food and manufacturing goes up, the price of everything goes up. When millions of Americans lose their jobs because their companies can no longer afford to operate, then it effects all of us.

Finally, I don't have all the answers, but I know when I see one that doesn't cover all the bases.

    Regarding this:

Name me a great immigrant accomplishment in the last 50 years?
Many of the the greatest minds of the world have immigrated to the US. This is where the best science has been done, and continues to be done.

First, second, and third generation immigrants are scattered throughout our medical, educational, and scientific communities. The brain drain is flowing in our direction, and we are a stonger nation because of it.

Annecdote that may interest only me: The doctor that tended to me last week in the ER was Chinese, and the dentist I went to today was Pakistani.
