You could try the Dell outlet for a refurbished laptop.

I watch the slickdeals.net coupons that Dell has.. alot of times you can get a $500 off coupon code to use for a new purchase. Every once in a while a $750 off comes around. Check em out and see what kind of config you can come up with.

i tend to shy from eMachines. I'd check reviews first. that is really cheap though for what is included.

WHY HP? I just bought a zd8000 about 3 weeks ago and love it. Came with a ATI 600 256mg Graphics card. It runs great...

What dont I know that I should about HP?

Bought one for the wife maybe a year ago. The machines' physical construction is exceptionally poor. The keyboard is not so good. The mouse touch-pad does not work very well at all. One of the mouse buttons doesn't even work unless you really wail on it. We gave up and bought a USB hand-held trackball (cute little thing actually).

The wireless was a constant struggle, however there are many possible reasons for something like that, so I should be more hesitant to blame the brand for that.

The monitor is poorly designed. If you unplug the AC power, it dims to 1/2 brightness. That's nice, because it saves battery power. It's not so nice because you can't see the screen very well. There is no user option anywhere that I can find to override this. Manually maxing the brightness has no effect, it's still half dim. What makes it worse is the AC power plug is of cheap design and construction, so it falls out of the back of the computer on a regular basis.

Basically a very shoddily made machine, where cheap cheap cheap was the order of the day. I will buy an IBM next. That's what we "upgraded" from and the wife misses her old IBM notebook.

This notebook is a Compaq, but the HP next to it at the display was identical in style and appearance - obviously they had both used the same Chinese contractor.

Maybe they're better. Sounds like FightClub likes his. But I'm a "burn me once..." kind of guy. I won't be buying another.

In fact, after looking at retrobox, I just bought their only Compaq Evo-510 desktop. 2.2ghz, 512mb ram for $179.00 It's the same model we use at work, so I can get parts for it out of my storage room. Sweeeet. This will make the wife happy. Finally get rid of her old 800mhz.

i used to run EVO at fleet. darn good machine. hardnok, i always stayed away from eMachines b/c last I knew, you shipped it to Korea for service. I'm sure that has changed by now though.

Nuts, if you run across a deal like that again, please let me know. I could justify that purchase.
