I can't... I need a network that actually works for phone calls, not AT&T.

I still have no cell phone of any kind, and no plans to get one, either. Without a cell phone, when I'm away from work, I'm completely unreachable unless I decide to check my e-mail (I screen all calls on my land line via my answering machine).

Cell phones have saved my butt on a number of occasions (cars breaking down.)
In the case of family emergency, I need to be accessible as well.

So a cell phone is pretty much a must have at this point (1 each for my wife and I.)

The built in camera, web browsing, and push email are compelling as well.

I've had other phones with other companies. They're all pretty much the same. Some things better, some things worse. Nothing ever perfect. It's the coverage bubble that's the deciding factor.

I no longer even use a landline. I have a cell phone, my wife has a cell phone and that is all we require. Once the kids are old enough to need to make calls they will most likley get thier own as well.

Unfortently I need to be reachable 24/7 for work and pagers suck so yeah.

The inevitable question becomes - what do you do about 911?

Rely on the Cell Phone version?

I was a big fan of just having a cell phone until Katrina hit and there wasn't a cell phone in the region that could make a call out. I'm always going to have a land line for 911 if nothing else.

Cell Phone version of 911 is the same as the landline version of 911... at least in my dealings with dialing 911 from the cell phone.

I need a landline for DSL. (No, cable is not an option - by choice).

Except when it comes to knowing where the call is coming from.
Yeah they can do the whole triangulating thing if you stay on phone long enough.

Land line they know where you are when it rings.

We only have cell phones BECAUSE of 911

Our land line kept getting lonely and calling 911 on it's own.

Nothing is more embarrassing than being awakened at 3 am by a police officer insisting that you called 911 when you know darned well you didn't AND then he wouldn't go away for frear that I was being threatened or something.

My land line would give people the who tried to call the busy signal for days or weeks it was bad.

As for an iphone... No way I just use the basic phone as an outgoing instrument nothing fancy is needed for me.

I thought Apple had to scrap the iPhone name due to a lawsuit with Cisco and thier iPhone. What happened with that? I guess Apple won the lawsuit, that or paid Cisco phat cash.

Kind of funny, I don't know a single person that has a landline other than my Mom.

They worked out an agreement of some sort. It was never in question.

Its funny this topic came up. My wife and son (8 months old) were at the car dealership last week waiting for her truck to finish with an oil change. She gave my son the cell to play with because he was being fussy. Well it rings and she takes it from him and answer it. It was a 911 operator. She had to totally convince the operator that our son dialed it on accident. They wanted to send a car out to check and they did know her location. I was tripping on that because I thought they couldn’t tell. But most cells have a location option turned on by default. Good to know...
