I got my Christmas loot early: Photo equipment! It arrived this past Friday. I've taken up macro photography after being captivated by the insects, spiders and flowers of southeast Texas. Here's my rig:

Canon Rebel XT Digital SLR Camera
Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro Lens
    Canon Speedlite 380EX
    Delta Flip I Flash Bracket
    Pro Optics Extension Tube Set

You can check out my Flickr page and Macro Photo Set for some of my best results. I'll post a pic of my camera rig tomorrow. Here are a few of my favorite pics that I shot over the past few days:

***WARNING TO STITCHJONES: THERE ARE SPIDERS IN THE LINKS!***

Wolf Spider - This critter is smaller than a dime, and was sitting just above the grassline by the foundation of my house at dusk. Shot with the Sigma 105mm, @ 1:1 without extension tubes. Flash diffused through 2 soda cans and a paper towel. I believe this is my best shot.

Tree Stink Bug - Shot on my straw welcome mat with the Sigma 105mm @ 1:1 without extension tubes. Flash bounced off of nearby vinyl siding.

Jumping Spider on Interior Woodwork - I love jumping spiders. They're usually smaller than 1/16 of an inch, and are quite skittish, but they've got a lot of character in their "faces". Shot with Sigma 105mm @ 1:1, without extension tubes. Flash bounced off ceiling. Check out the Salticid eye pattern! I can't resist: Here's another jumper.

Green Broad Tipped Conhead Katydid - Shot with Sigma 105mm @ 1:1, without extension tubes. Direct diffused flash. This character was lazy from a slight cold snap, and made a decent subject, and was one of my first shots. About 2" in total length.

Besides all the photo gear, I also received another early Christmas present, and clearly this is the best of all.

I actually could not come up with a list for my wife this year. *bows head in shame* There is nothing I was really "jonesing" for this year - at least not anything that costs in reasonable range. Spending $600 - $700 for an Xbox 360 and 'required' gear just wasn't high on my list - sorry Stitch!

So my list is lame, but it's what I gave her. Luckily, she's pretty good at gift giving, unlike me - who is pretty much the guy on the Lowe's commercial.

I'm tricky this year. I'm looking for a new camera (I loathe the way my current HP cheapo cam gobbles double-A batteries), and also a new MP3 player (since I currently have to use a flathead screwdriver to touch the contacts on the circuit board to turn the volume up.

I got my 'Dad' chair this month (Leather, La Z Boy Recliner) so I'm actually good to go for Christmas. But - needing something on my list - I still want more books. After 'World War Z' and now L4D, I'm back on a Zombie kick so I'm asking for a number of books also riding the Zombie wave of popularity: Books from Brian Keene; J.L. Bourne; and Kim Paffenroth.
